Colombian jazz pianist Carolina Calvache, is part of the new generation of pianist and composers whose style blends South American rhythms with a contemporary jazz sound. Her participation in 2011 Mary Lou Williams woman in jazz festival for outstanding artists, brought the attention of the North east audiences at the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts. Legendary pianist Toshiko Akiyoshi described her music as “ Marvelous”.

Carolina is a New York City based pianist who has played and collaborated with musicians such as Antonio Sanchez, Jaleel Shaw, Michael Rodriguez, John Benitez, Samuel Torres, Ludwig Afonso, John Elis, Linda Oh, Hans Glawishing, Rodrigo Recabarren, Ross Pederson, Petros Klampanis, Uri Gurvish, Roman Filiu, Rodney Green, Ricky Rodriguez, amount others. Her Debut album Sotareño reflects the artist traditional roots from Colombia and the elements of modern jazz. The music is presented as a collection of pieces for jazz quartet, trio, duo and piano solo. It features a high line of musicians, Michael Rodriguez on trumpet, Ludwig Afonso on Drums, Hans Glawischnig on bass, Jaleel Shaw on saxophone and Antonio Sanchez as Special guest. The album will be released in july 2013 under her own label. “ I think there is no other place to be inspired to produce an album like this like in NYC, where you can hear, see and taste the beauty of each country in the same place, and absorb all of it to develop your own voice”. Carolina has collaborated with the great pianist and composer Luis Perdomo (pianist of Miguel Zenon\\\'s Quartet, Ravi Coltrane and others), who has been a musical assistant in the elaboration of this album.

Calvache started her formal education at the Conservatory of Music Antonio Maria Valencia when she was 6 years old. She obtained her degree in Music with emphasis in piano from Universidad del Valle in Cali,Colombia. Later, Carolina was given a full scholarship and started her jazz education in the University of North Texas where she was also given a fellowship to complete her Master’s Degree. While at UNT, she conducted and arranged for big band and one smaller ensemble called The Zebras. She also taught a jazz piano lab class.

Carolina\\\'s work as a composer embraces piano solo, woodwinds works and big band compositions. Her piano piece for piano solo \\\"Te agradezco\\\" had a successful turn out and has been published in Colombia for an important publishing company of the University of Valle in Santiago de Cali. The pianist is currently and active performer in the NYC, playing and collaborating with different artist from the New York City jazz scene.
